Automatic Ice - Glossary
AIS Control Systems:
Custom-fabricated electronic systems that coordinates production and/or processing equipment into a unified ice system.
Ammonia:
A refrigerant most common to large capacity ice making systems.
Bailer:
A machine designed to either automatically or manually package a set of small bags of ice into a master bail.
Block Maker:
A refrigerated machine that functions to freeze blocks of ice, commonly 10 - 15 pounds in size.
Block Press:
An automatic or semi-automatic ice processing machine that functions to hydraulically press cube-type ice into formed blocks of ice, commonly 10 pounds in size.
Compressor:
Mechanical device that functions to compress low pressure / temperature vapor to high pressure / temperature vapor.
Condenser:
Portion of a refrigeration system that functions to cool high pressure / temperature gas and condenses it to a liquid state.
Cooling Tower:
A machine used in conjunction with water-cooled ice makers which functions to dissipate heat transferred in the refrigeration process.
Evaporator:
Component of low-side that functions as a cooling device.
Evaporative Condenser:
A condensing device that utilizes water and air to cool, and condense, the high temperature vapor from the compressor.
Form / Fill & Seal Machine:
A fully automated bag processing machine. This machine forms ice bags from plastic rolls of film into ice bags, fills the newly formed ice bag with a measured amount of ice, and then closes the filled bag of ice.
High-Side:
High pressure part of the refrigeration system consisting mainly of the compressor, receiver and condenser.
Hot Gas Line:
The refrigerant pipe that feeds the high pressure / temperature gas (hot gas) from the receiver to the freezer to assist in defrosting.
Ice Merchandiser:
A point-of-sale refrigerated vending machine designed to hold and/or display bags of ice for retail sale.
Liquid Line:
A specific refrigeration pipe that feeds liquid refrigerant from the receiver to the evaporator (freezer).
Low-Side:
Low pressure part of refrigeration system consisting mainly of evaporator and accumulator.
Make-up water temp:
The temperature of the incoming water to the ice maker. This is one of the variables effecting production capacity of Vogt® ice machines.
Private Label Ice Bags:
Custom printed plastic ice bags designed for retail sale.
Receiver:
Component of high-side that stores refrigerant.
Remote Sump:
A unit used in conjunction with a cooling tower in locations that have outside temperatures that fall below freezing.
Screw Conveyors:
Custom-fabricated devices that function to move controlled quantities of ice.
Shaker or Ice Reel:
Devices which function to separate good-quality ice from undesirable chips and snow.
Storage Bin:
A device, which may or may not be mechanical in design, for holding and/or storing quantities of bulk ice.
Tube-Ice®:
This is a Trade name for the type ice produced by a Vogt® ice maker. It is a small, cube- type ice shaped as a cylinder with a small hole through the center.
Vaporiter:
Vilter manufacturing trade name for a suction accumulator with a built-in heat exchanger.
Volumetric Bagger:
A machine designed to transfer a measured amount of bulk ice into an ice bag.
Take-Off System:
A mechanical device that functions to remove unclosed bags of ice from the bagging machine and transfer bags into the closing machine.
Walk-In:
A term used to commonly described a small freezer room designed to store frozen product.
